Why a Shed Gym Makes Sense
Edinburgh gym memberships average £30-£60 per month, adding up to £360-£720 per year. A well-equipped shed gym pays for itself within 2-3 years while providing unlimited, private access.
Beyond the financial argument, a garden gym eliminates the biggest barrier to exercise: friction. When your gym is 30 seconds from your back door, there's no excuse not to train. No travel, no changing rooms, no peak-hour queues for the squat rack.
Our gym shed customers consistently report training more frequently after switching from commercial gyms. The convenience factor transforms exercise from a scheduled event into a natural part of daily life.
Choosing the Right Shed Size
The minimum practical size for a gym shed is 10×8 feet — enough for a bench, rack, barbell and some floor space for bodyweight movements. However, if budget and garden space allow, go bigger:
• 10×8: Basic strength training — bench, rack, barbell, dumbbells
• 12×8: Room for a cardio machine alongside free weights
• 12×10: Full gym setup with multiple stations and comfortable movement space
• 14×10+: Dedicated gym with separate cardio and weights zones
Ceiling height matters too. Standard shed height (around 7 feet at the ridge) is fine for most exercises but may restrict overhead pressing. Our heavy-duty and workshop-height sheds offer 8+ feet of headroom.
Flooring for a Gym Shed
Standard shed flooring won't survive the punishment of dropped weights and heavy equipment. You need a purpose-built gym floor:
Rubber gym tiles (15-20mm) are the gold standard. They absorb impact from dropped weights, provide grip for lifting, and protect the shed floor beneath. We supply interlocking rubber tiles that cover the entire floor area without gaps.
For heavy lifting (deadlifts, Olympic lifts), add a lifting platform — typically a 2.4m × 1.2m section of 18mm plywood topped with rubber matting. This distributes load across a larger area and protects both the floor and the foundation.
We reinforce the shed floor joists beneath gym areas to handle the concentrated loads. Standard 38×50mm joists at 450mm centres are upgraded to 50×75mm at 300mm centres for gym use.
Insulation & Temperature Control
Training in an uninsulated shed is miserable in January and stifling in July. Proper insulation transforms a gym shed into a year-round training facility.
We insulate walls, roof and floor with 50mm rigid foam boards, achieving excellent thermal performance. A vapour barrier prevents condensation — critical in a gym where you're generating significant moisture through sweat and breathing.
For heating, a wall-mounted 2kW panel heater is sufficient for most gym sheds. It brings the space to a comfortable training temperature within 15-20 minutes. In summer, opening windows and the door usually provides adequate ventilation, but we can install extractor fans for particularly intense sessions.
Electrics & Lighting
Most gym equipment runs on standard 13A sockets — treadmills, exercise bikes, speakers and phone chargers all plug in without special wiring. We install a consumer unit with RCD protection, multiple double sockets, and LED panel lighting.
Good lighting is important for safety and motivation. We fit 5000K daylight LED panels that provide bright, even illumination without shadows. A separate circuit for a Bluetooth speaker and phone charging point near the door completes the setup.
For smart gym equipment that requires internet, we can install an ethernet run from the house or ensure the shed position is within Wi-Fi range.
Equipment Layout & Storage
Efficient layout maximises usable space. Position your rack or cage against the back wall, with the bench in front. Mount a mirror on one side wall for form checking. Use wall-mounted plate storage and dumbbell racks to keep the floor clear.
Pull-up bars can be mounted in the doorframe or from the ceiling joists — we reinforce the relevant timbers during construction. Resistance band anchor points, TRX mounts and battle rope hooks can all be built into the structure.
We've built dozens of gym sheds across Edinburgh and can advise on layout for any combination of equipment and training style.
