Damp is the number one enemy of garden sheds in Scotland. Our wet climate, combined with poor ventilation and inadequate bases, means thousands of sheds develop damp problems every year. Here's how to prevent it — or fix it for good.
Understanding the Problem
Scotland receives more rainfall than almost anywhere else in the UK, with Edinburgh averaging around 700mm per year. That moisture doesn't just stay outside — it seeps into poorly constructed sheds through gaps in cladding, rises from the ground through inadequate bases, and builds up as condensation on cold surfaces.
A damp shed isn't just unpleasant. It damages everything stored inside — tools rust, wooden furniture warps, fabrics develop mould, and electrical equipment becomes unsafe. Over time, persistent damp also attacks the shed structure itself, causing timber to rot, fixings to corrode, and panels to warp beyond repair.
The good news is that damp is almost entirely preventable with the right shed, the right base, and basic maintenance. Edinburgh Shed Centre builds every shed with Scottish weather in mind, using pressure treated timber, proper ventilation, and professional-grade bases that keep moisture out from day one.
Common Causes
Rising Damp from the Ground
Sheds placed directly on soil or grass absorb ground moisture through the floor. Without a proper base, timber floors can rot within 2-3 years in Scottish conditions.
Poor Ventilation
Sealed sheds trap warm air that cools overnight, creating condensation on walls, roof panels and stored items. Without airflow, mould grows rapidly.
Inadequate Cladding
Thin, low-quality timber or poorly fitted panels allow rain to penetrate through gaps, knot holes and warped boards.
No Drip Bars or Flashings
Missing drip bars above doors and windows allow rainwater to run directly into the shed interior during heavy rain.
Blocked Guttering
Overflowing gutters splash water against shed walls, saturating cladding and accelerating rot at the base.
Ground Slope Towards Shed
If surrounding ground slopes towards the shed, rainwater pools at the base and soaks into the lower timbers.
Our Solutions
Pressure Treated Timber
All our sheds use pressure treated timber that resists rot, fungal decay and insect damage for 15+ years — even in Scotland's wettest areas.
Pressure Treated Sheds →Concrete or Slab Base
A properly installed concrete base raises your shed off the ground, prevents rising damp, and ensures perfect drainage away from the structure.
Shed Bases →Built-In Ventilation
Our heavy-duty sheds include ventilation gaps and optional air vents that allow moisture to escape without letting rain in.
Heavy Duty Sheds →Quality Cladding & Weatherproofing
Thick, overlapping cladding with proper seals, drip bars and mineral felt roofing keeps rain out in even the heaviest Scottish downpours.
Professional Installation
Our installers ensure every panel is properly fitted, sealed and secured. No gaps, no shortcuts — just a watertight shed from day one.
Our Services →Annual Treatment Programme
We recommend annual treatment with a quality wood preservative to maintain the water-resistant barrier on all exposed timber surfaces.
Aftercare Guide →Base & Foundation Guidance
The foundation is the most important defence against damp. A concrete slab base is the gold standard for Scottish sheds — it creates an impermeable barrier between ground moisture and your shed floor, and provides perfect drainage when installed with a slight fall.
For smaller sheds, a compacted gravel pad with a weed membrane underneath can work well, provided it's at least 50mm thick and extends beyond the shed footprint to prevent water pooling at the edges.
We always recommend raising the shed at least 50mm above ground level using pressure treated bearers. This air gap allows ventilation underneath the floor, preventing moisture build-up and dramatically extending the life of the floor timbers.
Edinburgh Shed Centre installs both concrete and slab bases across Edinburgh and Central Scotland. Every base is levelled with a laser level and designed to shed water away from the structure.
