Popular Man Cave Themes
The beauty of a man cave is that it's entirely personal. Our most popular themes include:
The Pub Shed: Complete with bar counter, optics, beer taps, bar stools and pub-style décor. We build the bar as a permanent fixture with a sink, mini-fridge space and proper lighting.
The Sports Den: Big screen TV, comfortable seating, sports memorabilia and a mini bar. Perfect for watching matches without monopolising the family TV.
The Gaming Room: Whether tabletop gaming, console gaming or PC gaming, dedicated power, lighting and climate control make for the ultimate setup.
The Workshop Retreat: Part workshop, part relaxation space — for those who find hands-on projects therapeutic. Workbench at one end, armchair and stereo at the other.
Choosing the Right Size
Man caves need enough space to feel like a genuine room, not a glorified cupboard:
• 10×8: Cosy retreat for 2-3 people — good for a reading nook, gaming den or solo workspace
• 12×8: Comfortable for 4-5 people — ideal pub shed or sports den size
• 12×10: Spacious entertaining area with room for bar, seating and activities
• 14×10+: Full-size retreat with multiple zones
Log cabins are a popular choice for man caves because their thicker walls (28-44mm) provide better insulation and a more 'room-like' feel than standard shed cladding. The rustic interior also adds character without needing to line the walls.
Making It Comfortable Year-Round
A man cave that's only usable in summer is a missed opportunity. Full insulation, heating and proper flooring transform it into a genuine year-round room.
Insulation: 50mm rigid foam in walls, roof and floor, with a vapour barrier. This alone makes the space comfortable from March to October without any heating.
Heating: A 2kW electric radiator or infrared panel heater brings even a large man cave to comfortable temperature in 20 minutes during winter. Underfloor heating is a premium option that frees up wall space.
Flooring: Laminate or vinyl plank flooring over insulated subfloor creates a proper room feel. For pub sheds, consider slate-effect vinyl for an authentic bar floor look.
Electrics & Entertainment
Every man cave needs robust electrics:
• Consumer unit with RCD protection
• Multiple double sockets around the perimeter (minimum 6 for a 12×8 space)
• Dedicated circuit for high-draw appliances (electric heater, mini-fridge)
• TV aerial point or ethernet for streaming
• Exterior security light on PIR sensor
• Atmospheric interior lighting (dimmer switches, LED strip lighting, pendant lights)
We run armoured cable from the house consumer unit and install everything to BS 7671 regulations. All electrical work is certified and Part P compliant.
Bar Build Essentials
If you're going for a pub shed, the bar is the centrepiece. We build bespoke bars from solid timber with a hardwood or granite-effect counter top.
Essentials include: a bar sink with cold water supply and waste drainage, space for an under-counter fridge, power sockets behind the bar for blenders and phone charging, and a bar-back shelf or optics rail.
For draught beer, you'll need space for a keg under the counter and a font on top. We can plumb in a beer line and drip tray during construction. Wall-mounted bottle optics, glass racks and pub-style signage complete the look.
Adding Value to Your Home
A well-built, insulated man cave with electrics genuinely adds value to your property. Estate agents increasingly list garden buildings as a feature, and buyers see them as a lifestyle asset.
The key is quality construction. A cheap flat-pack shed with a TV inside is not a selling point. A properly built, insulated, wired log cabin with a fitted interior is a genuine room — and valued accordingly.
We always build man caves to the same structural standards as our garden offices, ensuring they last decades and add lasting value to Edinburgh homes.
