Making the Most of Limited Space
Small gardens demand smart thinking. Every square metre counts, and the wrong shed choice can make a compact garden feel even smaller. The key principles for small-space shed selection are:
Go tall, not wide: A pent-roof shed with a high front wall gives you maximum internal height for shelving and wall-mounted storage without eating into floor space.
Use the boundaries: Positioning a shed flush against a boundary wall or fence makes the most of dead space and keeps the centre of your garden open.
Think about what's going in it: If you only need to store bikes, a narrow bike shed (2×6 or similar) takes up a fraction of the space of a standard shed. If you need tools and garden furniture, a 6×4 with internal racking may be all you need.
Consider access: In tight city gardens, a double-door shed allows you to access the full width of the interior without needing to stand in the garden to reach past a single door.
Pent Roof vs Apex: Which Is Best for Small Gardens?
For small Edinburgh gardens, pent roof sheds are almost always the better choice. Here's why:
Lower rear roofline: A pent shed slopes from front to back, meaning the rear wall can be as low as 1.5m. This reduces the visual impact on neighbouring properties and keeps the shed below typical fence heights.
Boundary placement: Because the rear wall is low, a pent shed can sit right against a boundary fence without overshadowing the neighbour's garden or causing disputes.
Simpler rainwater management: The single-slope roof directs all rainwater to the back of the shed, away from the door. This matters in small gardens where the shed door might open directly onto a path or patio.
Apex sheds have their place — they offer more headroom in the centre and look more traditional — but in a garden under 8 metres long, a pent roof almost always makes more practical sense.
Our pent shed range starts at just 4×3 feet (suitable for a small tool store) and goes up to 12×8 for gardens that can accommodate a larger footprint.
Bike Sheds: The City Dweller's Best Friend
Cycling is huge in Edinburgh, and many city-centre residents own two or more bikes but have nowhere secure to store them. A dedicated bike shed solves this problem without taking up the space of a full garden shed.
Our bike shed range includes:
Compact bike store (3×6): Holds 2–3 bikes with a single-door access. Fits along a wall or at the end of a narrow garden. Ideal for couples or small families.
Double bike shed (4×7): Holds 4–6 bikes with double doors for easy wheeling in and out. Popular with families and keen cyclists who have road, commuter and mountain bikes.
Bike-and-tool combo (6×4 with partition): Half the shed stores bikes vertically on wall hooks; the other half provides tool and garden equipment storage. Our most popular option for Edinburgh flats with small private gardens.
All our bike sheds feature:
• Reinforced floors to handle the weight and movement of bikes
• Wide doors for easy access without scratching frames
• Security-grade locks and concealed hinges
• Ventilation to prevent condensation on bike components
For flats and tenements, we can also install ground anchors inside the shed for additional bike security.
Vertical Storage and Internal Organisation
In a small shed, wall space is more valuable than floor space. Here's how to maximise every cubic centimetre:
Wall-mounted tool racks: Hang spades, forks, rakes and brooms on wall hooks or a dedicated tool rack. This clears the floor and makes everything visible and accessible.
Shelving: Fit shelves above head height for items you use less frequently — plant pots, seed trays, seasonal decorations. Our sheds can support standard bracket shelving on any wall.
Roof storage: The apex (in apex sheds) or the high front wall (in pent sheds) creates usable space above the eaves. A simple plywood shelf spanning the roof joists provides excellent out-of-the-way storage.
Door-mounted storage: The inside of the shed door is wasted space in most installations. A few hooks or a small rack can hold frequently used items like gloves, secateurs and watering cans.
For customers who want a fully organised interior, we can install bespoke internal racking and shelving at the time of shed construction. This is much easier than retrofitting and ensures everything is properly secured to the frame.
Bespoke Sizing for Awkward Spaces
City gardens rarely come in standard sizes. Whether you have an L-shaped courtyard, a narrow passage alongside a tenement, or a sloping plot that needs a stepped base, we can build to fit.
Our bespoke service allows you to specify exact dimensions — including non-standard widths, depths and heights. We can also modify standard designs with features like:
• Offset doors to avoid obstructions
• Reduced heights to fit under windows or eaves
• Angled rear walls to follow boundary lines
• Integrated shelving and racking built to your specification
Bespoke sizing typically adds 10–20% to the cost of a standard shed but ensures you get exactly the right building for your space. For many small-garden customers, this is the difference between having a shed and not having one at all.
We always recommend a site visit before ordering a bespoke shed. Our team will measure the space, discuss access for delivery and installation, and help you decide on the best layout. Call 07938875344 to arrange a free visit.
Installation in City-Centre Edinburgh
Installing sheds in Edinburgh's city centre and inner suburbs presents unique challenges that we handle every week:
Access: Many Leith, Stockbridge and New Town properties have narrow closes, shared stairwells or controlled-entry gates. We always carry out a site visit before quoting to ensure we can get materials to the shed location.
Parking: City-centre parking restrictions mean our van may need to be a street or two away. We factor this into our scheduling and pricing — it doesn't affect the quality of the build, just the logistics.
Neighbours: In shared gardens or closes, we're experienced at working considerately — keeping noise to reasonable hours, cleaning up thoroughly and respecting shared spaces.
Bases: For small city gardens, our timber bearer system on a levelled surface is often the most practical base option. It doesn't require a concrete mixer or heavy plant, which may not be feasible in tight urban spaces.
Most small-garden installations are completed in half a day to a full day. We arrive early, build efficiently and leave the site clean and tidy.
