    Small Garden Shed Ideas Edinburgh

Many Edinburgh homeowners assume they don't have room for a shed. City-centre gardens in Leith, Stockbridge and Marchmont can be as small as 3m × 3m, and even suburban plots in Corstorphine and Morningside are often narrower than expected.

Edinburgh's Victorian terraces, tenement gardens and new build plots often come with limited outdoor space. But a small garden doesn't mean no shed — it means choosing the right one. Here are our best solutions for compact Edinburgh gardens.

    Understanding the Problem

Many Edinburgh homeowners assume they don't have room for a shed. City-centre gardens in Leith, Stockbridge and Marchmont can be as small as 3m × 3m, and even suburban plots in Corstorphine and Morningside are often narrower than expected. But with the right design, almost every garden can accommodate useful outdoor storage.

The key is matching the shed to the space — not the other way around. A 4×3 pent shed fits against a boundary wall without wasting height, a narrow bike shed stores cycles without blocking paths, and a corner shed tucks into otherwise dead space.

At Edinburgh Shed Centre, we build sheds to any dimension. If your garden needs a 5×3 or a 6×2, we can build it. We also offer space-saving features like internal shelving, hooks and wall-mounted storage that maximise every square inch inside.

    Common Causes

    Victorian Plot Layouts

Edinburgh's Victorian terraces and tenements have long, narrow gardens with limited width — often just 3-4m. Standard shed sizes don't always fit.

    New Build Small Gardens

Modern developments in Livingston, Winchburgh and East Calder often feature gardens under 30m², leaving very little room for standard sheds.

    Access Restrictions

Narrow side passages, low gates and limited vehicle access in Edinburgh's older properties make delivery and installation challenging.

    Boundary Rules

Sheds must be set back from boundaries in some areas, reducing the usable footprint. Conservation area restrictions add further limitations.

    Multi-Use Gardens

Small gardens need to serve multiple purposes — play area, dining space, planting and storage — so the shed footprint must be minimal.

    Shared Access

Tenement and flatted properties often have shared garden access, limiting where a shed can be positioned.

    Our Solutions

    Pent Sheds

Pent (mono-pitch) sheds fit flush against a wall or fence, maximising floor space while keeping the height low on the boundary side. Ideal for narrow Edinburgh gardens.

    Bike Sheds

Our compact bike sheds store 2-4 bicycles securely without taking up garden space. Perfect for Edinburgh's cycling commuters in Leith, Stockbridge and the city centre.

    Internal Organisation

Shelving, hooks, tool racks and wall-mounted storage turn a small shed into an efficiently organised space that holds far more than you'd expect.

    Corner Sheds

Corner-fit designs make use of otherwise wasted L-shaped spaces in gardens. They tuck into corners without blocking paths or views.

    Vertical Storage

Tall, narrow sheds with internal shelving use height instead of floor space. A 4×3 shed with 5 shelves stores as much as a 6×4 without shelving.

    Base & Foundation Guidance

Small shed bases require the same care as large ones. A concrete base — even a 4×3 — should be properly excavated, compacted and poured to prevent future problems. Cutting corners on a small base is a false economy.

For very tight spaces, we can use a slab base instead of poured concrete. Individual slabs laid on compacted sand are easier to install in gardens with restricted access and can be removed if needed in future.

We always ensure the base is at least 50mm larger than the shed on all sides. This allows rainwater to drip clear of the shed walls and prevents water pooling at the base edges.
